The U.S. has imposed new tariffs and sanctions on Colombia after the government refused to let two planes carrying deported migrants land. In response, the U.S. raised tariffs on Colombian goods by 25%.
President Donald Trump criticized Colombian President Gustavo Petro, saying that blocking the flights endangered U.S. national security. He also ordered the tariff increase, which could rise to 50% within a week, according to reports.
It’s not just about trade—Washington is also considering travel bans, visa cancellations, and financial sanctions on Colombian officials. The U.S. Secretary of State said Petro initially approved the flights but later revoked permission while the planes were already in the air.
