The city of Lisbon in Portugal faced a deadly accident yesterday evening. The city’s famous Gloria funicular train lost control while climbing uphill. The train crashed into a building and caused devastation.
Eyewitnesses said the train moved as if it had no brakes. They saw the carriage crumple like paper. People screamed and ran in fear.
The crash killed 17 people. Another 20 people suffered injuries and went to hospitals. A Canadian tourist told the BBC that she saw passengers jumping out of the windows in panic. She heard a terrifying noise and said, “I have never heard a sound like this.”
An American tourist said he and his friends almost took the ride but decided to walk instead. Within moments they heard the massive crash. They returned and saw the train wrecked like a metal cage. He described it as a huge tragedy.
The accident spread across world media. Lisbon’s people now mourn in grief. Around the world, people paid respect to the dead and wished recovery for the injured.
