Category 4 Hurricane Erin is hitting the Atlantic Ocean with severe force. It is generating life-threatening surf and rip currents along the US East Coast and Bermuda. Puerto Rico, the southeastern Bahamas, and the Turks and Caicos Islands experienced heavy rain and power outages.
Authorities in North Carolina, Dare County, and Hatteras Island issued mandatory evacuation orders. Officials warned, “Do not enter the ocean this week.” From Tuesday to Thursday, the risk of rip currents will rise along the coast from Florida to New England.

Erin weakened from Category 5 to Category 4 but regained strength after an eyewall replacement cycle. Warm ocean waters and dry conditions could allow Erin to intensify further.
Erin is the first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. Forecasters are closely monitoring another tropical wave. People are advised to stay alert and exercise extreme caution near beaches and while engaging in ocean activities.
