Legionnaires’ Disease Spreads in New Zealand

Legionnaires’ disease has now hit New Zealand. In Harlem, 58 people have been infected. Two have died, and another remains hospitalized.

The culprit is Legionella bacteria. It spreads through hot water systems like cooling towers, hot tubs, and humidifiers. City authorities identified 11 contaminated cooling towers and cleaned them immediately.

Health officials issued public warnings. People experiencing fever, headaches, cough, or difficulty breathing are urged to seek medical help right away. Those over 50, smokers, and individuals with respiratory issues face higher risks.

This disease does not spread from person to person. Infection occurs by inhaling vapor from water contaminated with Legionella.

The disease was first reported in 1976 at an American Legion convention in Philadelphia, which is how it got its name.

Today, New York City faces another wave of concern. The tension hasn’t eased. Citizens remain fearful. The world is watching closely.
