People came peacefully to shop. But just before 5 p.m. on July 26, a terrifying incident unfolded inside the Walmart in Traverse City. The suspect randomly attacked customers. He injured 11 people.
Customers didn’t panic. They chased the suspect. Several women helped the injured. A group ran outside, caught the attacker, and stopped him. They handed him over to police and ended the ordeal.

Doctors at Munson Medical Center are now treating the 11 injured. They say 7 people are in “stable” condition and 4 remain in “serious” condition. None are in “critical” care anymore.

Angela Helfrich, who witnessed the incident, said, “I was scared like being in a temple during a storm. What if it had been me?”
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Pete Buttigieg expressed condolences. They praised the quick action of Traverse City residents and police.
This became the latest breach of peace in the U.S. But the brave and immediate actions of bystanders prevented a greater tragedy.
