Diogo Jota and his brother die in a car accident

From July 3 onwards, Liverpool and every Reds fan have been mourning in tears. Portuguese star Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva tragically lost their lives in a car accident in Spain.

At the time, Jota was playing with passion and purpose for Liverpool. Now, he remains an eternal memory. His iconic number 20 jersey has been officially retired — the first time in the club’s 133-year history.

This honour applies to all levels of the club, including the men’s, women’s, and academy teams. Liverpool made this heartfelt decision after discussions with Jota’s wife, Rute, and his family.

CEO Michael Edwards said, “He wasn’t just a footballer. As a human being, he earned a permanent place in our hearts. Through number 20, his spirit will live on forever.”

Sunday’s match against Preston will be a tribute to him. “You’ll Never Walk Alone” will be sung. Players will wear black armbands. Preston will lay a wreath in remembrance.

Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 and brought victories to the team. His talent and love touched fans worldwide, who now mourn his loss with heavy hearts.

He may be gone, but his number — and his love — live on forever at Liverpool.
